A Brief History of Dates
Dates are fruits that grow on the date palm tree in several different parts of the world. They are most commonly found in the Middle East — in fact, this fruit has been grown and eaten in that region for thousands of years. Outside of this part of the world, date palms grow in India, California, northern Africa and the Canary Islands.
Date palms came to this side of the world during the 1700s and 1800s by Spanish missionaries. Even though dates are becoming more and more popular in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran and Iraq produce the most dates in the world.
Health Benefits of Dates
Finding healthier snacks is a great way to have a more balanced diet. Instead of reaching for cookies, chips, pretzels and other foods that are high in fats, calories and sodium, look for healthier options! When you add dates to your diet, you may start seeing these awesome health benefits:
1. Mineral Rich: Date rolls contain magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, iron, calcium and phosphorous. Among their functions include bone formation, red blood cell utilization, skin health and blood pressure control.
2. Heart Health: Dates are one of the best food sources of potassium, with a 100-gram serving providing 16% of the recommended daily intake. This electrolyte balances out sodium to promote healthy blood pressure. The monounsaturated fatty acids in the almonds also lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke.
3. Reduction of Allergies: Being one of the rare food sources of organic sulfur, dates effectively reduce the symptoms of allergic reactions and help prevent seasonal allergies.
4. Digestive Health: Date coconut rolls bulk is rich in fiber, which promotes smooth movement of food in the gut to prevent constipation, colitis and hemorrhoids. Fiber also prevents the absorption of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the gut.

I had no idea if I would like these, as I am generally not a fan of nuts or dried fruit. However, I did the Whole30 diet and have drastically reduced my added sugar intake. I am a huge sweets person, and fruit never satisfied my sweet tooth. However, these were yummy! The date part of the roll is pretty soft and sticky but keeps its shape. The coconut flavor is not overpowering. It kind of reminds me of the Coconut Cream Pie Larabar. My husband also really liked them. I think they are a great substitution for candy. They are so sweet I would have thought there was sugar added.
